Domaines de recherches

Paléoclimatologie, Paléocéanographie, Palynologie, Archéologie

La recherche de Maria Fernanda Sanchez Goñi s’intéresse à la compréhension du système climatique naturel, en dehors de toute activité anthropique et, plus particulièrement, aux interactions végétation-atmosphère-océan au cours du dernier million d’années et leur impact sur les populations humaines en Europe et Afrique du Sud. Depuis la fin des années 90, elle aborde cette problématique en utilisant une approche originale qui se base sur l’étude des grains de pollen préservés dans les séquences sédimentaires marines. Ses travaux ont contribué à comprendre les processus à l’origine des entrées en glaciation ; à connaître l'origine de la variabilité climatique rapide, à la compréhension de la réponse de la végétation et du climat aux changements climatiques larges et rapides observés pour la première fois au Groenland ; aux causes les plus probables de l’extinction des Néanderthaliens et des changements démographiques en Europe au cours de l’Âge de Pierre.
